Unlike many states, South Carolina does not automatically apply a discount to your residence if you are a full time resident. Instead, you will automatically be charged the 6% tax rate instead of the 4% tax rate, which will make a substantial difference in the tax you are required to pay. Beaufort County does not process applications quickly, so it is strongly suggested that you apply as soon as you are able to do so. Information about the legal residence exemption may be found on Beaufort County's website. There is also an online application.

Be aware that you will have to provide your most recent South Carolina tax return. This can add a complication if you have moved from out of state, as you will not have that form. The Assessor's office will provisionally approve you for the exemption rate, however you will have to reapply the following year, and perhaps even the year after if you file a part time resident tax return.
